Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour and salt until combined.
  2. In a stand mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, beating until fully incorporated and smooth.
  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and pat into two equal 8-inch discs.
  5. Knead red food coloring into one disc until the hue is vivid.
  6. Roll both discs into 12 x 8-inch rectangles about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Layer red rectangle on plain one, roll tightly into a log, and press seam.
  8. Wrap log in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and slice log into 1/4-inch rounds.
  10. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges set and centers are pale.
  11. Cool cookies on wire rack after 5 minutes on baking sheet.
