Shibuya Honey Toast recipe

  • Author: Sophia

Ingredients

Scale

For the Honey Toast Base:

  • 1 Loaf of Thick-Cut White Bread (Pain de Mie or Pullman Loaf recommended): The foundation of Honey Toast is a sturdy, slightly sweet white bread. Pain de Mie or Pullman loaf are ideal due to their tight crumb, soft texture, and square shape, which are perfect for creating the “brick” structure. If you can’t find these specifically, a good quality brioche loaf or even a thick-cut Texas toast loaf can work as substitutes. Avoid using regular sliced sandwich bread, as it is too thin and won’t hold its shape well.
  • ½ cup (1 stick) Unsalted Butter, Softened: Butter is essential for creating the crispy, golden-brown exterior and rich, buttery flavor of the toast. Unsalted butter allows you to control the salt level in your dessert.
  • ¼ cup Honey: High-quality honey is crucial for the signature sweetness and aroma of Honey Toast. Choose a honey with a flavor you enjoy – wildflower, clover, or even a slightly darker honey like buckwheat can add depth.
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar: Sugar helps to caramelize the exterior of the bread and adds extra sweetness.
  • Pinch of Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances the overall flavor profile.

For the Toppings (Customize to your liking!):

  • Vanilla Ice Cream: A classic topping that provides a cool and creamy contrast to the warm toast. High-quality vanilla bean ice cream is recommended for the best flavor.
  • Whipped Cream (Freshly Whipped or Canned): Adds lightness and airiness, complementing the richness of the ice cream and toast. Freshly whipped cream is always superior in taste and texture, but canned whipped cream is a convenient alternative.
  • Fresh Fruit (Berries, Bananas, Mangoes, Peaches, etc.): Fresh fruit adds color, flavor, and a touch of acidity to balance the sweetness. Berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are popular choices. Sliced bananas, mangoes, peaches, or kiwi also work beautifully.
  • Chocolate Sauce or Syrup: Drizzling chocolate sauce adds a decadent touch and enhances the sweetness. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or even white chocolate sauce can be used.
  • Caramel Sauce or Syrup: Caramel sauce adds a rich, buttery sweetness that complements the honey and butter in the toast.
  • Sprinkles, Chocolate Shavings, or Cookie Crumbs: For added texture and visual appeal. Sprinkles, chocolate shavings, crushed cookies (like Oreos or graham crackers), or chopped nuts can be used.
  • Powdered Sugar: A dusting of powdered sugar adds a delicate sweetness and a beautiful finishing touch.
  • Cherries (Maraschino or Fresh): Cherries are a classic garnish for desserts and add a pop of color and sweetness.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread “Box”

  1. Preheat Oven (Optional for Baking Method): If you prefer to bake your Honey Toast, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). For a quicker method, you can use a toaster oven or even a regular toaster for the bread cubes.
  2. Cut the Bread: Using a serrated knife, carefully cut a square or rectangular loaf of bread, leaving about a 1-inch border from the bottom crust intact. You want to create a “box” with a solid base. The size of the box will depend on the size of your loaf and your desired serving size. Aim for a box that is roughly 4-6 inches in each dimension.
  3. Hollow Out the Bread: Gently scoop out the inside of the bread box, leaving about a ½-inch thick shell. Be careful not to break through the bottom crust. Set aside the bread cubes you’ve scooped out – these will become the delicious, crispy toast cubes.

Step 2: Make the Honey-Butter Mixture

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, honey, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Mix Well: Use a fork or spoon to thoroughly mix all the ingredients until well combined and creamy. The mixture should be smooth and easily spreadable.

Step 3: Assemble and Toast the Honey Toast

Baking Method (Oven):

  1. Butter the Bread Box: Generously spread the honey-butter mixture all over the inside and outside of the bread box, ensuring every surface is coated.
  2. Butter the Bread Cubes: Toss the reserved bread cubes with the remaining honey-butter mixture, coating them evenly.
  3. Arrange Cubes in Box: Place the buttered bread cubes back into the hollowed-out bread box, packing them in snugly. You can arrange them neatly or pile them high for a more rustic look.
  4. Bake: Place the assembled Honey Toast on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the bread box and cubes are golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning, especially towards the end of baking.

Toaster Oven Method:

  1. Butter the Bread Box and Cubes: Follow steps 1 and 2 from the baking method to butter the bread box and cubes.
  2. Toast in Toaster Oven: Place the bread box and bread cubes separately in a toaster oven. Toast at a medium setting until golden brown and crispy, checking frequently to prevent burning. This method may require toasting in batches depending on the size of your toaster oven.

Toaster Method (For Bread Cubes Only – Quicker, but less visually impressive box):

  1. Butter the Bread Cubes: Toss the reserved bread cubes with the honey-butter mixture.
  2. Toast Bread Cubes in Toaster: Toast the buttered bread cubes in a regular toaster until golden brown and crispy. You may need to toast them in batches. The bread box in this method will be toasted separately, or you can lightly toast it in a pan or toaster oven for a short time.

Step 4: Assemble and Decorate Your Shibuya Honey Toast Masterpiece

  1. Place Toast Box on Plate: Carefully transfer the baked or toasted bread box to a serving plate.
  2. Arrange Toasted Cubes: If you baked the cubes separately or want a more dramatic presentation, arrange the toasted bread cubes on top of and around the bread box, creating a visually appealing pile.
  3. Add Ice Cream: Place scoops of vanilla ice cream (or your chosen flavor) on top of the toasted bread cubes and inside the bread box. Be generous with the ice cream!
  4. Add Whipped Cream: Pipe or dollop whipped cream around the ice cream and bread cubes, creating swirls and peaks for visual appeal.
  5. Decorate with Fruit: Arrange fresh fruit around the ice cream and whipped cream, adding color and freshness.
  6. Drizzle with Sauces: Drizzle chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or other sauces of your choice over the entire creation.
  7. Garnish with Sprinkles and Toppings: Sprinkle with sprinkles, chocolate shavings, cookie crumbs, chopped nuts, or any other toppings you desire.
  8. Dust with Powdered Sugar: Lightly dust the entire Honey Toast with powdered sugar for a final touch of sweetness and elegance.
  9. Top with Cherries: Place maraschino or fresh cherries on top as a classic garnish.
