Ingredients
For the Blueberry Smoothie Base:
- Frozen Blueberries: 1 ½ cups
- Plain Greek Yogurt: ½ cup (Full-fat will yield the creamiest result)
- Milk of Choice: ½ cup (Dairy, almond, oat, or soy milk all work well)
- Ripe Banana: ½, fresh or frozen (for natural sweetness and extra creaminess)
For the Honey-Vanilla Swirl:
- Plain Greek Yogurt: ¼ cup, thick-style
- Pure Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon (Use real extract, not imitation, for the best flavor)
- Raw Honey: 1 to 2 teaspoons (or maple syrup for a vegan alternative)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Honey-Vanilla Swirl
In a small bowl, combine the ¼ cup of thick Greek yogurt, the pure vanilla extract, and the honey. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and completely combined. Set this bowl aside. Preparing this first allows you to assemble the smoothie as soon as the base is blended.
Step 2: Blend the Blueberry Smoothie Base
In the canister of a blender, add the ingredients for the base. It’s best to layer them for optimal blending: start with the milk, then the ½ cup of Greek yogurt and the banana. Top with the 1 ½ cups of frozen blueberries. Starting with the liquids at the bottom helps the blades move easily and prevents the blender from getting stuck.
Step 3: Blend Until Creamy
Secure the lid and blend, starting on a low speed and gradually increasing to high. Blend for about 45-60 seconds, or until the smoothie is completely smooth, thick, and creamy, with no blueberry skins or chunks remaining.
Step 4: The Art of the Swirl
Now for the fun part. Grab two serving glasses. Pour about half of the blueberry smoothie mixture into each glass.
Next, add a generous dollop (about half) of the honey-vanilla swirl mixture into the center of each glass.
Pour the remaining blueberry smoothie mixture on top, covering the swirl.
Finally, top each smoothie with the last of the honey-vanilla mixture. Use a spoon, knife, or straw to gently push the top dollop down into the smoothie and give it one or two gentle swirls. Be careful not to overmix, as you want to maintain distinct ribbons of white and purple.
Step 5: Serve Immediately
Serve the smoothies right away while they are cold and frosty, garnished as desired.
