Croque Madame Sandwich Recipe

  • Author: Sophia

Ingredients

Scale

  • 4 slices of whole-grain bread
  • 4 slices of Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
  • 4 slices of cooked turkey or chicken (instead of ham)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread:

    • Spread Dijon mustard on one side of each slice of whole-grain bread. This layer of mustard adds a tangy kick that complements the richness of the cheese and the savoriness of the meat.

  2. Assemble the Sandwich:

    • On two slices of the mustard-coated bread, layer the cooked turkey or chicken followed by the Gruyère cheese. Top each with the remaining bread slices, mustard side down.

  3. Toast the Sandwich:

    • In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and toast for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.

  4. Cook the Eggs:

    • In a separate pan, cook the eggs sunny-side up. The egg should be cooked just enough so that the yolk remains runny, adding a rich and creamy texture to the sandwich.

  5. Finish and Serve:

    • Top each sandwich with a fried egg and season with salt, pepper, and fresh herbs if desired. Serve the sandwiches warm, allowing the gooey cheese and runny egg yolk to meld with the savory turkey and crispy bread.
