Batty Trail Mix recipe

  • Author: Sophia

Ingredients

The Salty & Crunchy Base (The Cave Walls):

  • Bat-Shaped Pretzels or Pretzel Twists: 3 cups. If you can find seasonal bat-shaped pretzels, they are the star of the show! If not, regular pretzel twists or even small pretzel sticks work wonderfully to provide that essential salty crunch.

  • Chocolatey Cereal Squares (like Chocolate Chex™): 3 cups. These add a light, crispy texture and a rich chocolate flavor that forms the foundation of the mix.

  • Popped Popcorn: 2 cups, plain or lightly salted. The popcorn adds a light, airy volume to the mix and looks like ghostly puffs.

  • Roasted & Salted Peanuts or Almonds: 1 cup. For a deeper, nuttier crunch. Use peanuts for a classic trail mix feel or almonds for a different flavor.

The Sweet & Spooky Add-Ins (The Cave Dwellers):

  • Reese’s Pieces™ or Autumn-Colored M&M’s™: 1 cup. The orange, brown, and yellow colors are quintessentially autumn and add a wonderful candy-coated crunch.

  • Candy Corn & Candy Pumpkins Mix: 1 cup. It simply wouldn’t be a Halloween trail mix without these iconic, chewy, and sugary treats.

  • Miniature Peanut Butter Cups: 1 cup. The combination of chocolate and peanut butter is irresistible.

  • Semi-Sweet or Dark Chocolate Chips: ½ cup. We lovingly refer to these as “bat droppings” to the delight of all the kids.

  • Miniature Marshmallows: ½ cup. These look like little ghosts floating throughout the dark and chocolatey mix.

The Optional Chocolate Drizzle (The Bat Wings):

  • Dark or Black Candy Melts: ½ cup. Melted and drizzled over the top, this helps clusters of the mix stick together and adds a dramatic, spooky look.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Mixing Space

Find the largest mixing bowl you own. A big, wide bowl gives you plenty of room to mix all the ingredients without them spilling over the sides. If you plan to add the chocolate drizzle, line a large baking sheet (or two) with parchment paper or wax paper. This will be your surface for letting the trail mix set.

Step 2: Combine the Base Ingredients

In your large mixing bowl, combine all of the “Salty & Crunchy Base” ingredients: the pretzels, chocolatey cereal, popcorn, and peanuts or almonds. Gently toss them together with a large spoon or your hands until they are evenly distributed.

Step 3: Add the Sweet & Spooky Mix-ins

Now, add all of the “Sweet & Spooky Add-ins” to the bowl: the Reese’s Pieces™, candy corn and pumpkins, miniature peanut butter cups, chocolate chips, and miniature marshmallows.

Once again, gently toss everything together until all the colors and shapes are beautifully mixed. Be a little careful during this step to avoid crushing the more delicate items like the popcorn and cereal squares.

Step 4: The Optional Drizzle

If you are adding the chocolate drizzle, spread the prepared trail mix out in an even layer on the parchment-lined baking sheet(s).

Place the dark or black candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave them in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval, until they are completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat them.

Using a spoon or a piping bag with the tip snipped off, drizzle the melted candy over the trail mix in a back-and-forth motion.

Step 5: Let it Set and Serve

If you added the drizzle, let the trail mix sit at room temperature for about 30-60 minutes, or until the chocolate has completely hardened. You can speed up this process by placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes.

Once the chocolate is set, gently break the trail mix apart into clusters and pieces. Transfer it to a large serving bowl, and your Batty Trail Mix is ready to be devoured!
