Ingredients
- Fresh Brussel Sprouts: 1.5 – 2 lbs. Freshness is key! Look for firm, bright green Brussel sprouts that are tightly closed and feel heavy for their size. Avoid sprouts that are yellowing, have wilted leaves, or have a strong odor. Fresh Brussel sprouts will yield the best flavor and crispest texture when air fried. Frozen Brussel sprouts can be used (see FAQ), but fresh is highly recommended for this recipe.
- Olive Oil: 2 tablespoons. Olive oil is essential for achieving crispy Brussel sprouts. It helps to evenly coat the sprouts, promoting browning and crisping in the air fryer. Opt for extra virgin olive oil for its rich flavor and healthy fats. The oil also prevents the sprouts from drying out during the air frying process and helps the seasonings adhere.
- Salt: 1 teaspoon (or to taste). Salt is a fundamental seasoning that enhances the natural flavors of the Brussel sprouts. It also plays a role in drawing out moisture, which contributes to a crispier exterior. Kosher salt or sea salt are excellent choices for their clean flavor and texture. Adjust the amount of salt to your preference, considering any additional toppings or sauces you might use.
- Black Pepper: ½ teaspoon (freshly ground, or to taste). Freshly ground black pepper adds a pungent warmth and depth of flavor to the Brussel sprouts. It complements the slightly sweet and nutty notes of the sprouts and balances the saltiness. Coarsely ground black pepper can provide a more pronounced peppery flavor, while finely ground pepper will blend in more subtly.
- Garlic Powder: 1 teaspoon. Garlic powder provides a savory, aromatic background note that enhances the overall flavor profile. It’s a convenient way to add garlic flavor evenly throughout the Brussel sprouts. Garlic powder is less likely to burn in the air fryer compared to fresh minced garlic, making it a great choice for this cooking method.
- Onion Powder: ½ teaspoon. Onion powder adds a subtle sweetness and umami depth, complementing the garlic powder and creating a well-rounded savory flavor. It works synergistically with the garlic powder to create a complex and delicious seasoning blend. Like garlic powder, onion powder distributes flavor evenly and doesn’t burn easily in the air fryer.
Instructions
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Preheating is crucial for ensuring even cooking and achieving maximum crispiness. Allow your air fryer to preheat for at least 3-5 minutes. A preheated air fryer will start cooking the sprouts immediately upon contact, promoting browning and crisping.
- Prepare the Brussel Sprouts: While the air fryer preheats, prepare your Brussel sprouts. First, wash the Brussel sprouts thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris. Pat them completely dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Excess moisture can steam the sprouts instead of roasting them, hindering crispiness.
- Trim the Brussel Sprouts: Trim the hard, woody ends off each Brussel sprout using a sharp knife. This part of the sprout is tough and doesn’t cook well. Next, depending on the size of your Brussel sprouts, you may want to halve or quarter them. For medium to large sprouts, halving or quartering ensures even cooking and allows the insides to become tender while the edges crisp up. Smaller sprouts can be left whole if desired, but halving or quartering generally yields better results.
- Toss with Olive Oil and Seasonings: In a large bowl, place the trimmed and halved/quartered Brussel sprouts. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the sprouts. Toss them gently to ensure they are evenly coated with the oil. This is important for crisping and flavor development. Next, add the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder (and red pepper flakes or smoked paprika, if using). Toss again thoroughly to distribute the seasonings evenly across all the sprouts. Make sure every piece is coated for maximum flavor.
- Air Fry the Brussel Sprouts: Arrange the seasoned Brussel sprouts in the air fryer basket in a single layer. It’s crucial not to overcrowd the basket, as this will lead to steaming instead of roasting and prevent crisping. If necessary, cook the sprouts in batches to ensure they are in a single layer. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking. Shaking the basket at the halfway point ensures even browning and crisping on all sides of the sprouts.
- Check for Doneness and Crispiness: After 15 minutes, check the Brussel sprouts for doneness. They should be tender on the inside and golden brown and crispy on the outside. If they are not yet crispy enough, continue air frying for another 2-5 minutes, keeping a close eye on them to prevent burning. The exact cooking time may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model and the size of your sprouts.
- Add Optional Toppings (if desired): Once the Brussel sprouts are cooked to your liking, carefully remove the air fryer basket and transfer the sprouts to a serving bowl. If using Parmesan cheese, sprinkle it over the hot sprouts immediately and toss gently to melt. If using balsamic glaze, drizzle it lightly over the sprouts just before serving. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice can also be added at this stage for brightness.
- Serve Immediately: Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts are best served immediately while they are hot and crispy. The crispiness will diminish slightly as they cool. Serve as a side dish, appetizer, or as part of a larger meal.
