Scale
For the Filling
- 1 lb ground beef: The rich, hearty base of your filling.
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce: Adds a tangy, sweet flavor to the meat.
- 2 tbsp onion soup mix: Provides a savory, umami kick.
For the Dough
- 3 cups all-purpose flour: Forms the structure of the dough.
- 1 tsp salt: Enhances the overall flavor.
- 1 cup butter or margarine: Offers a rich and flaky texture.
- 3/4 cup shredded cheese: Adds a cheesy flavor and helps bind the dough.
- 3/4 cup milk: Moistens the dough, making it pliable.
- 1 tbsp lemon juice: Reacts with the milk to create a tender crust.
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Filling
- Cook the Beef: In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Ensure that the meat is fully cooked, and drain any excess fat.
- Mix the Ingredients: Stir in the barbecue sauce and onion soup mix until well combined. Set this mixture aside to cool slightly.
Step 2: Make the Dough
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the flour and salt.
- Cut in the Butter and Cheese: Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in the butter and shredded cheese until the mixture becomes crumbly.
- Add Wet Ingredients: In a separate container, combine the milk and lemon juice. Gradually add this mixture to the flour, stirring until a dough forms.
Step 3: Assemble the Pies
- Roll Out the Dough: Divide the dough into manageable portions and roll out to about 1/8 inch thick on a floured surface.
- Cut into Rounds: Use a 2.5-inch round cutter to cut out circles. Place half of these rounds on ungreased baking sheets.
- Fill the Pies: Add a tablespoon of the beef mixture to the center of each circle on the baking sheet.
- Seal the Pies: Top with the remaining dough circles. Seal the edges by brushing with a little water and pressing with a fork. Cut a small slit in the top of each pie to allow steam to escape.
Step 4: Bake
- Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 425°F.
- Bake the Pies: Place the baking sheets in the oven and bake for 12-16 minutes, or until the pies are golden brown.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm.
